Why 80 Volts?

Power, the ability to work, is expressed in watts. Watts are expressed as the voltage multiplied by the current (amperes). When you limit the voltage in the power formula (watts = volts x amperes), as in the case of a 36 or 48 volt electric forklift truck, you can only increase the power available by increasing the ampere draw of the motor.

*This works fine in theory*, but in practice the design engineer runs into a basic battery limitation -- internal resistance.

Any battery has a basic internal resistance that decreases voltage available at the battery terminals.

This power loss increases within the battery, as more current is demanded, thus progressively diminishing battery performance.

Sometimes the same motor might work for either 36 or 48 volt if it can stand the higher operating temperatures imposed by the heavier horsepower load.

*An 80-volt forklift truck offers advantages. *

For an equal horsepower output, 80 volts means that copper conductors only need to be 60% of the size of the conductors in a 48-volt lift truck. Because components are smaller and less expensive, the replacement costs are also less.

A conductor can transmit energy more efficiently with higher voltage and lower current (power loss is proportional to the square of the current, while it is only directly related to the resistance of the conductor). Therefore, it take 1.7 times as much current per horsepower at 48 volts as it does at 80 volts.

**Electric utilities have practiced this concept for decades.**

They save energy by using small cables to carry high voltage (low current) over long distances to substations where the power is converted to lower voltage (higher currents) for local distribution and use.

So, the power lost in an electric vehicle motor winding is reduced with less current and higher voltage. This can make it possible to obtain higher power in the same size motor package without undesirable heating.
